CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson is not waiting for ex-President Donald Trump to be judged by a jury of his peers. Vance, a possible VP contender, was there along with Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a famed former college football coach. The speaker’s appearance is different, given the constitutional heft of his office and the figurative connotations it evokes. Some experts have questioned whether any other defendant besides Trump would face the same indictment at the hands of a prosecutor, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat. Trump is exercising his right to mount a defense and is considered innocent until proven guilty.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's finance minister said on Monday the country's tax office would not force firms to pay interest on taxes deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic and allow extra time to repay the debt once they keep on top of current liabilities. The government introduced the tax warehousing scheme in May 2020 and firms that had deferred liabilities that arose during one of Europe's toughest lockdown regimes had already been given extra time until May 2024 to enter into repayment arrangements. The tax office said that 5,265 taxpayers were responsible for the bulk of the warehoused debt – 1.5 billion euros – and that almost 70% of the firms with deferred debts owe less than 5,000 euros each. Business insolvencies in Ireland rose 32% year on year in 2023, but were still below pre-pandemic levels. Accounting firm PwC, which compiled the figures, expects a similar rise in 2024 and a return to the 20-year average of annual closures.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBENGALURU, Oct 12 (Reuters) - India's central bank said on Thursday it has imposed a penalty of 53.9 million rupees ($647,762.58) on Paytm Payments Bank for non-compliance with some provisions, including Know Your Customer (KYC) directions. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Paytm Payments Bank had failed to identify beneficial owners of entities on-boarded by it for providing payout services. It also did not monitor payout transactions and carry out risk profiling of entities availing payout services, among others. The RBI had last year barred Paytm Payments Bank from taking on new customers and ordered a comprehensive audit of its IT systems, citing "material" supervisory concerns observed in the bank. Paytm Payments Bank had also breached the regulatory ceiling of end-of-the-day balance in certain customer advance accounts that were availing payout services, the central bank said in a statement.

Just six months before the Garcia family was scheduled to have their day in court, Corizon filed for bankruptcy. "The Corizon bankruptcy is presently in a court ordered mediation, and we are seeking a global resolution for all the parties involved." Goldberger's attorney, Joseph Haspel, responded to queries with a statement saying that "Mr. Goldberger is a passive investor" in Corizon, Tehum, YesCare, Perigrove, and Perigrove 1018.

REUTERS/Carlos Garcia RawlinsNEW DELHI, June 28 (Reuters) - The Indian government met large global firms such as Foxconn (2354.TW), Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and Reliance Industries (RELI.NS) to find ways to boost manufacturing in the country with its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. The PLI scheme, introduced in late 2020, is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's main industrial policy to boost manufacturing. The government has so far announced incentives for 14 sectors including electronics and technology products, pharmaceutical drugs, and drones, among others, drawing investments totalling 625 billion Indian rupees ($7.62 billion) until March 2023, per the statement. Investments under the PLI scheme are expected to rise further to 2.74 trillion rupees as it runs its course, according to government estimates. With more than 1.97 trillion rupees earmarked for incentives, payouts totalled 29 billion rupees until fiscal 2023 across eight industries.

[1/2] British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman meet with the local community and police leaders in Rochdale, Britain April 3, 2023. REUTERS/Phil Nobel/PoolLONDON, May 22 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to his ethics adviser regarding the handling of a speeding offence by his interior minister, his spokesperson said on Monday, after calls for an investigation into whether she broke ministerial rules. Opposition parties have called on the prime minister to investigate whether Braverman breached the ministerial code over her handling of the speeding incident. "The prime minister believes in proper process so that's why he's availing himself of the information whilst he has had a conversation with the independent adviser," Sunak's spokesperson told reporters. Sunak reappointed her less than a week later in one of his first acts as prime minister.
After all, the only real alternative for Mr. McCarthy would be to go to court and seek to enjoin the president’s decision to continue to pay obligations — legal obligations already legislatively incurred. The impact of going to court to argue for defaulting on the nation’s debt, let alone the political optics for Mr. McCarthy, would be very risky. But it’s hard to see this availing them of anything other than impotent spectacle, further cementing their public image as unserious, especially if the president formally repudiates the debt ceiling now or this month rather than waiting until June. But suppose the Republicans take the president to court nonetheless. The president’s multiple arguments would be compelling, and the markets, in any case, are already pricing in worries of this sort.
BENGALURU, Oct 19 (Reuters) - India's competition regulator said on Wednesday that it had fined online hotel-booking companies MakeMyTrip Ltd (MMYT.O) and Goibibo and IPO-bound hotel chain Oyo a combined $47 million for anti-competitive behaviour. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been investigating the companies since 2019 following allegations by a hotel body that MakeMyTrip gave special treatment to SoftBank-backed (9984.T) Oyo on its platform. The CCI has directed MakeMyTrip and Goibibo (MMT-Go) to amend their market behaviour after fining them about $27 million. The FHRAI had also alleged that Oyo and MakeMyTrip were hurting competition by offering deep discounts and charging "exorbitant" fees from hotels.
